During April you will start to hear the first cuckoos call as they arrive from Africa for the breeding season. Your best chance of seeing them is on woodland edges as they often call across grasslands and heaths from the nearby trees.
It is only the male cuckoo that makes the sound we all recognise. The females make almost a chuckling noise which mimics a bird of prey. In fact, the cuckoos are the ultimate mimics!
