We felt incredibly honoured and humbled to have someone discuss their significant challenge of transitioning from a lifetime in the armed forces to civilian life with our small group during the energy flow conversation. This experience has truly resonated with me, as I recognise opportunities for providing assistance.
We need to acknowledge that these brave, adaptable, problem-solving, strong, and stoic individuals are encountering circumstances that no one should have to see or experience. They are required to make quick decisions and frequently function in a 'fight or flight' mode, unlike the average person who does not face such situations regularly. It's important to remember why they subject their mind, body, and spirit to these challenges as a career: they genuinely care. They felt compelled to make a difference in the world. They aspired to protect the innocent and use their strength of character to shield us from a harmful world.
From what I've observed, their values stay the same after leaving the military; they remain the compassionate, adaptable, quick-thinking, and resilient individuals they were when they joined. They've emerged with a completely new set of skills, yet they struggle to find employment, form friendships or relationships, or simply adjust to civilian life. This is not their failure, but ours. Why aren't we offering these remarkable individuals jobs? Why aren't we assisting them in transitioning back into civilian life? And why are we not giving them the space and support to process their traumas?
To all the ex-service people out there, I want you to know, I see you, I hear you and I support you. I see that you have lived in that state of fight or flight for so long you don't know how to turn it down, which can create mental, physical and emotional exhaustion, insomnia and addictions which can lead to depression. I know how to help you out of that state.
When trauma resides in your body, discussing it can be beneficial, but there is a delicate balance between expressing the emotional impact of that trauma and reactivating it by repeatedly revisiting it. Trauma takes on a physical form within the body and can lead to illness and pain. To genuinely release trauma from the body, you need to reconnect with your body's natural alert system and FEEL the trauma out of it. Achieving this requires being in a neutral state, not in fight or flight mode. I can guide you in this process, and by doing these two things, everything else will fall away, life will become manageable once more and you can welcome happiness and a future back to your life.
