The past couple of days have been perfect conditions for hair ice fungus. This is a rare phenomenon as it needs exacting conditions. The fungi Exidiopsis effusa resides in split, dead hardwood and is the main factor in the creation of hair ice. It needs moist air and temperatures just below 0°c and occurs when the water on the surface of the wood freezes forming a barrier, trapping liquid between the pores and the ice which creates a suction and pushes the water out of the wood and freezes with the exposure.
If you are lucky enough to come across it, make a note of where you saw it, as you have a good chance of spotting it again on the very rare days the conditions are perfect for this wonderful creation of nature.
